Hackney Council to get rid of the green recycling boxes?

Hackney Council is conducting a trial of mixed recycling collections using orange bags in Cazenove Ward.  The bags replace the familiar green box, and the recycling is sorted at an MRF (Material Recycling Facility) rather than at the kerbside.

We have concerns that the quality of the material will suffer and there will be more rejections, and we've written to the council's recycling officer to ask about our concerns.

The trial has been extended up until Cabinet makes it's decision on the preferred means of collection on March 26.

We replied to James on December 2 and received further questions on December 6 which we responded to on December 22.

The cabinet will consider a proposal to extend commingling (Orange Sack) system to the whole borough on 26th March, so if that's approved then the trial will become permanent.  I'm going on a tour of the recycling facilities and a Q&A session tomorrow and I'll report back.

Have you had a reply from the council? Do you know when will the trial be complete?

Thanks

Caroline

See also the Campaign for Real Recycling http://www.realrecycling.org.uk

This is an alliance of recyclers with FoE to try and stop commingling becoming the norm.

European Waste Law mandates source separation, but DEFRA is interpreting this to include commingled.  CRR is challenging this through Judicial Review and DEFRA has agreed to amend its interpretation while the review is adjourned until June.

For more information on why the council should stick to the separation of materials at the kerbside, see the report at http://www.foe.co.uk/resource/briefings/recycling_collections.pdf
